You might know rapper B.o.B. for pop hits like “Nothing On You” and “Airplane”. Recently, he’s been hitting headlines, but it’s not for his music. Instead, it’s for a GoFundMe campaign.
With his “Show BoB The Curve Campaign”, he plans to raise enough money to launch a satellite into space. This, he hopes, will help prove the Earth is flat, round, or something in between.
The rapper, also known as Bobby Ray, has been part of the flat Earth club since 2016 (if not earlier), joining celebrities such as Tila Tequila and NBA player Kyrie Irving.
He first announced his doubts over the Earth’s spherical shape in January 2015, when he posted a picture of himself on what looks like a mountaintop. In the caption, he added “The cities in the background are approx. 16 miles apart… where is the curve ? please explain this”.
It resulted in a rather entertaining Twitter feud with everyone’s favorite astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson. This itself resulted in diss tracks: “Flatline” by B.o.B. and “Flat to Fact” by rapper Tyson, the physicist’s nephew.
On his GoFundMe page, the rapper asks the public to “Help B.o.B. find the curve!” and donate money to send a satellite (“if not multiple”) “as far into space” as possible. He promises to keep everyone updated on his journey.
B.o.B.’s goal is to raise $200,000. This won’t be enough to get a full-blown, satellite but could cover a CubeSat or two, which would be enough to take a few images of the Earth’s curves.
At the time of writing, he’s raised $676 from a total of 32 people. Not all of them buy into his flat Earth conspiracy theory. Some are donating to see him humiliated. Another, more kindly, hopes it will help him “put the flat earth thing to bed”.
A flat Earth is not the only “alternative” theory B.o.B. believes in. As he explains in a video on HotNewWhipHop, he became interested in conspiracy theories after 9/11. Watching videos on YouTube convinced him it was an inside job.
He’s also said that Snapchat has been collecting users’ facial scans for a secret online database and that billionaires are transferring their consciousness into younger bodies. So yeah…
As Tyson puts it: “Duude – to be clear: Being five centuries regressed in your reasoning doesn’t mean we all can’t still like your music.”
Update: The goal has now been raised to $1,000,000. The Verge have warned that it could be a scam.
